Frequently Asked Questions

Is ILT accredited?

ILT is not currently accredited.  We intend to seek accreditation at the earliest possible date, after the graduation of our first Master of Divinity class.

How early do I need to apply?

It is best complete the admissions process at least one month prior to your desired start date.  This allows time to work out any technological issues and to register for classes.  We accept applications up to two weeks prior to the beginning of each term.

Can I transfer credits to ILT?

We do accept transfer credits from accredited institutions and schools with which we have reciprocity agreements.  No more than half of the credits toward a degree or certificate can be transferred from another institution.  One year of enrollment in ILT courses is required before being approved for internship placement.  We do not guarantee that all credits will transfer, but we make every effort to ease the transfer process.

Is there financial aid available?

Because we are not yet accredited, ILT students are not eligible for federal financial aid and student loans.  We have limited scholarship funds available.  We strongly encourage students to seek financial assistance from their local congregation.

What denominations recognize ILT degrees?

ILT does not endorse or approve candidates for call.  Various church bodies have their own standards and criteria for service.  Our degrees are recognized by LCMC and the Augsburg Lutheran Churches.  WE are in close conversation with CORE/NALC.  Our degrees are not recognized by the ELCA or LCMS.

How much does it cost?

Our courses cost $300 per credit hour for the 2010-11 academic year.  Degree courses are typically three credit hours each and certificate courses are typically two credit hours each.  Books are the only additional cost to students.

Do I have to move to Brookings?

All of ILT’s courses are taught on-line in real time.  Students attend courses from wherever they happen to be.  All they need is a computer, webcam, microphone, and high speed internet connection.  It is not necessary to uproot family or leave jobs in order to enroll at ILT.

Can I move to Brookings?

Taking ILT courses locally is an option.  Two to three courses each semester originate from Brookings.  All courses are available on-line in Brookings.  ILT does not currently offer room and board as part of a comprehensive fee.  However, Brookings is a university town and there is a lot of student-friendly housing available.

Do I need to enroll full time?

There is no requirement that students be enrolled full time.  Many of our students enroll part time so that they can continue to work full or part time jobs.
